Machinist's Blog: 5-Axis Programming with Tool Vectors - Overview

In today's Machinist's Blog, Mike Cope goes over the basics of what tool vectors are and how they are used in 5-axis machining. So what are tool vectors? Tool vectors are simply IJK values in a program, added to the end of an XYZ position, that determine what angle and direction the tool should tilt away from the commanded XYZ position. For example: a tool vector command of G01 X10. Y10. Z10. I0.5 J0.5 K0.707106 would be the same tool and axis position as calling G01 X10. Y10. Z10. B45. C45…without having to call out specific axis commands. The second command could ONLY be utilized on a machine with a BC machine configuration.

National Taiwan University – HURCO 5-axis Machining Demo Center

Hurco has partner the prestigious National Taiwan University (“NTU”) – Department of Mechanical Engineering (Precision Manufacturing Center) to set up a 5-axis Machining Demo Center in their Precision Manufacturing Laboratory. Hurco has provided one unit of the popular VMX30Ui 5-axis Machining Centre to the Precision Manufacturing Center for purposes of R&D and Educational purposes. This Hurco VMX30Ui will be the inaugural Simultaneous 5-axis machine used by NTU for their curriculum and will provide lecturers, researchers and students with an opportunity to work on complex 5-axis tool path utilizing industry leading features of the Hurco Max5 Controller. Hurco and NTU will use this Machining Demo Center to organize joint events such as seminars and workshops to reach out to the local Taiwanese job shops to help them through the journey of upskilling and transformation.
